Villa Gambin Grand Prix
Date: Saturday, March 23, 2013

Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of
being a “Grand Prix” winner?

Do you want to experience that very first winning feeling of
“Grand Prix” greats like:
Mario Andretti, March 6, 1971 (Kyalami, South African GP);
Niki Lauda, April 28, 1974 (Jarma, Spanish GP);
Gilles Villeneuve, October 8, 1978 (Montreal, Canadian GP);
Alain Prost, July 5, 1981 (Dijon, French GP);
Aryton Senna, April 21, 1985 (Estoril, Portuguese GP);
Nigel Mansell, October 6, 1985 (Brands Hatch, European GP);
Michael Schumacher, August 30, 1992 (Spa, Belgium GP);
Jacques Villeneuve, April 28, 1996 (Nurburgring, European GP);
Kimi Raikkonen, March 23, 2003 (Sepang, Malaysian GP);
Fernando Alonso, August 24, 2003 (Hungaroring, Hungarian GP);
Lewis Hamilton, June 10, 2007 (Montreal, Canadian GP); and
Sebastian Vettel, September 14, 2008 (Monza, Italian GP).

On Saturday, March 23, 2013 you will have the opportunity to “join” this elite group of drivers should you win the inaugural 2013 Villa Gambin Grand Prix (go-kart version). The circuit is the Grand Prix Kartways in-door track in Toronto with its fast “sweepers” combined with a technical “in-field” section.

Hopefully at this point you are smiling to yourself and thinking, “What is this?”

The Villa Gambin Grand Prix is three things:

    1. A fundraiser for the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity and its long term care residence for seniors and adults with special needs.
      a. The Charity was established in 2001 with the goal of building and maintaining a long-term care home on the campus of the Famee Furlane Toronto. The Villa Leonardo Gambin long term care residence with 168 beds was officially opened on October 30, 2004. Through fundraising initiatives major renovations and expansions have taken place for the benefit of residents and their loved ones.
    2. A fun event that will further strengthen and develop team spirit within your successful organization; and
    3. Bragging rights against your Villa Gambin Grand Prix competitors and experiencing the thrill of being a “Grand Prix” winner.

    By way of brief event summary, there are only twenty four (24) team entries ($1,500 / team of four). Each team entry consists of four members: Team Principal/Driver; and three (3) additional drivers. The first two rounds of the Villa Gambin Grand Prix are time trials during which each team driver’s goal is to post the fastest time for his/her team. At the conclusion of the time trials, the Team Principal nominates the team’s driver for subsequent elimination rounds. The subsequent rounds include: Quarter-Finals; Semi-Finals and a two heat Final. Each team driver is guaranteed participation in the first two qualifying rounds. Each team is guaranteed participation through to the Quarter Finals.

    The race day’s schedule will be:

    The 42nd Annual Famee Furlane Toronto Golf Classic
    Wednesday, June 20, 2012

    On the first day of summer, Toronto broke a 63-year-old (1949) record of 34.4 C and reached a high of 34.6 C. An extreme heat alert was issued as temperatures rose into the low 40s after factoring in the humidity!  That didn’t stop a full complement of brave golfers from coming out to our annual Golf Classic, in support of several worthy local charities.  They were well tended to with various food and drink stations, along the course, topped off with a great dinner at the Famee Furlane Toronto.

    The tournament was held at Carrying Place Golf and Country Club and funds raised were directed towards the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity (and its long-term care residence), CamH – Clinical Genetic Research Program and Caritas.

    The Golf Committee, chaired by Italo DiBonaventura, wishes to acknowledge and thank all our sponsors (including the Golf Classic’s presenting sponsor, Italian Canadian Savings & Credit Union), participants and volunteers for another successful year and congratulations to all the winners!

    Co-Chaired by the dynamic duo of Dolores Franco and Phyllis Capo, the 2012 Celebrating Community Afternoon Tea, held on Sunday, May 6th raised almost $40,000 in support of the Villa Leonardo Gambin Charity and Alternatives.

    Almost three hundred guests attended the event which was celebrated with traditional afternoon tea fare including a variety of teas, exquisite sandwiches and scones (the latter items deliciously made by the chefs of the al Fogolar Restaurant). Guests were warmly welcomed by Villa Leonardo Gambin resident, Beatrice Morettin, Master of Ceremonies, Elvira Caria kept the afternoon’s atmosphere light and cheerful while the Anthony Brancati Trio provided nuanced entertainment.

    The highlight of the afternoon was a presentation provided by guest speaker Pattie Lovett-Reid, a former Senior Vice President with TD Waterhouse Canada Inc. and, in addition to hosting MoneyTalk on Business News Network, she offers daily market commentaries on radio stations such as AM 740 and 680 News. She is a regular commentator for CTV, CP24 and the National on CBC.
