Dr. Grace Chua, Head, Division of Cardiology

Dr. Chua presented a general overview of cardiology, the medical specialty dealing with disorders of the human heart, to an attentive audience that braved one of the worst winter evenings of 2012. Dr. Chua discussed various anatomical features of the heart (e.g., atria, ventricles, heart valves) and diagnosis and treatment of heart related diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, heart failure, etc.). Throughout the ninety minute presentation, Dr. Chua answered a variety of questions from the audience which dispelled certain misconceptions as well as reassuring some concerned participants on the need for particular tests and procedures.

The inaugural Your Health Talk was attended by a cross-section of ages, ranging from mid-teens to mid-eighties. Following the presentation attendees had the opportunity to ask Dr. Ghosh, and Dr. Plenk specific questions related to themselves and family members as well as general questions on cause and prevention of strokes.

Ms. Sartori lead a highly informative session on diabetes and nutrition. Initially planned for one hour, but due to the enthusiasm of the presenter and the breadth of questions asked by the attendees on diabetes (from family genetics to foods to either encourage or avoid) the presentation went beyond two hours.

Dr. Danny Chen presented information on the seriousness of influenza (especially among the very young and elderly), how it is spread and compelling reasons why healthcare workers and the public should get the annual influenza vaccine. During the question and answer session Dr. Chen had the opportunity to demystify the influenza vaccine as well as addressing daily routines that can help prevent the spread of influenza (especially during “flu season”).

Dr. Zelina’s lecture, Dementia, Delirium, Depression was well-received by the attendees who provided comments which were informative and thought provoking. We often take mental health for granted and Dr. Zelina’s presentation confirmed the reality which is supported by scientific research that many people experience these episodes. His lecture addressed ways to cope, react and understand.
