Villa Leonardo Gambin appreciates those who wish to give back to their community by enriching the lives of our residents through friendships, support systems, and by enabling residents the opportunity to feel like they belong, develop themselves, help and meet others, enjoy their time together and encourage them to express themselves.
Volunteer candidates are individuals who are willing to donate their valuable time and are prepared to join a team of professionals who are dedicated to the holistic well being of the residents who live at the residence. Those willing to help achieve this goal as well as wishing to experience a pleasurable and rewarding time are welcome to contact Sonia Roul, Recreation Therapist at Villa Leonardo Gambin (905) 856-3939 ext. 755.
Requirements by the Ontario Ministry of Health state that each volunteer must be screened for tuberculosis using a 2-step Mantoux testing as well as provide the residence with a processed Vulnerable Sector Screening assessed and completed by your local police department. Once these items have been completed you may set up an appointment with the Volunteer Coordinator for an interview along with the submission of a volunteer application form. Reference checks will be done upon completion of the interview process.
Volunteers will then undergo an orientation to the Villa Leonardo Gambin long-term care residence the Volunteer Coordinator and discuss positions which would suit both the volunteer and the needs of the residents.
ii) Volunteer Opportunities
Meal Time:
- To provide assistance to those who cannot self feed and/or to provide encouragement or reminders to those who may be losing their ability to feed themselves. Volunteers wishing to assist in this particular area would be trained by an in house Dietitian.
Programming:
- To assist the program department in providing enjoyable activity to the residents. Such programs can include assisting with Bingo, Arts and Crafts, Baking.
Café:
- The Café Bar at Villa Leonardo Gambin is primarily operated by Volunteers. The Volunteer would have the opportunity to provide espresso and cappuccino to residents, families and visitors during the week and on weekends.
Religious Services
- Villa Leonardo Gambin offers a wide variety of religious services which Volunteers can help with or lead. Services such as a prayer or rosary group, assisting with the readings or set up of mass, Eucharistic offerings or someone who residents can express their spiritual feelings to are essential in keeping residents' faith and spiritual experiences intact.
Special Events:
- Residents enjoy and are consistently exposed to various entertainers, monthly birthday parties, holiday celebrations and events throughout the year. With the assistance of Volunteers Villa Leonardo Gambin is able to execute such events in a suitable and wonderful way. With extra helping hands, more residents will be able to be assisted to and from such events and serviced throughout the event.

iii) Youth Volunteer Opportunities
Youth volunteers are encouraged to get involved and give back to their community. It is important for our residents to integrate with younger generations within the community and allow for their stories to be heard, their experiences to be carried on and reflected upon. At Villa Leonardo Gambin we require that students wishing to complete school assigned volunteer hours complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service in order to receive a greater understanding and exposure to the long-term care setting. Youth aged 13 to 15 are welcome to become registered volunteers with the accompaniment of an adult registered volunteer.
